If you’ve been with us here at Power of Moms for awhile, you know that I am a huge fan of Jonathan Bailor’s SANE program. He has taught me how to eat whole, nutritious foods, helped me heal my body image issues, and completely changed my teenage daughter’s life by showing her how to lose the extra 25 pounds she had been carrying. (The story is here, if you’d like to start from the beginning!)
Now as the co-host of Jonathan’s weekly SANE Show podcast, I am learning more than ever before about the principles behind health and wellness, and I’m excited to share them here at Power of Moms so, if you’d like, you can apply these ideas to your families, as well!
Okay, so our most recent podcast was inspired by this email from my friend/Power of Moms Team Member Andrea Davis. Here’s what she wrote:
I just have to send you a quick note to say how much I loved your podcast about losing the last 10 lbs. Occasionally I have seen individuals (mothers, fathers, spouses) begin to change their eating and exercise habits, only to become so obsessed that soon they are more concerned about body image and being “unnaturally fit” (as Jonathan calls it) than being healthy. In some cases, this has been to the detriment of their families.
Honestly, watching this has made me weary of the “siren songs” of fitness because I don’t want to become obsessed with something that will become more important than my family. You are bringing it all back to the real reason why we want to be healthy. It is for our families…so we can spend more quality time with them. My kids have been asking a lot of questions about this new “diet” or “lifestyle” or the new anabolic steroids I purchased, and I have told them several times that not only do I want to be alive when they have kids, but I want to be able to pick their kids up and play and interact with them. I am doing this so I can live the life I want to live.
I love that she so clearly articulated her why–which is also the “why” behind my work with SANE.
It is way too easy to get caught up in exercising/eating/”looking the part,” but honestly, when I sit down with deliberate mothers around the world, what we ALL want is to be healthy, energetic, and happy so we can more fully enjoy our families.
