Remembering those who gave their lives for our freedom.
In teaching our children values and doing our best to give back we can do both as we remember those who have fought for our freedom. I have provided several ideas below to assist you with helping this month to be one of remembrance and to bring real meaning to this special day which is set aside to recognize those who have given and do give so much for each of us. Let us show our gratitude by making sure to teach and include our children in observing and participating in Remembrance Day or Veteran’s Day. Remembering is one of the greatest gifts we can give.
Discussion
War in the World
Tell your child about other places in the world who do not live in freedom and the things that they cannot do. Then tell them that because others fought, and died for us and for our country; for liberty we can live in a free country. Talk about the importance of saying thank you to those that died for us and those who fought valiantly and continue to do so every day. We can now live in peace and freedom because of their sacrifice.
Craft
Heart Poppies
Cut out hearts from red paper. It takes four hearts to make a poppy. The points of the heart glue together in the center. Then cut out a green circle and glue it on. You can make single poppy’s, a Remembrance Day Card, or a Poppy Wreath, gluing several hearts together.
Additional Ideas
* Go to a grocery store or other location where there are poppies being given. Then have your child donate some money for the poppy and place it on his jacket in remembrance.
* Go to a memorial or cemetery and take some flowers to say thank you.
* Discuss with your child about the one minute of silence. Help them to understand the importance of showing reverence for the men that gave their lives for us. Then on November 11th observe the one minute of silence in your home. (Your children may not be able to do it for the whole minute but praise them for their efforts and for showing reverence.)
* Learn a little bit more of the history and share some stories about your country with your child. Tell them all of the reasons you love living where you do and what you are thankful for.
QUESTION: What traditions do you have to honor those who have served your country?
CHALLENGE: Next time the kids are home from school for a day of remembrance for those who have served your country, remind them why they have the day off.
