April, thank you so much for the opportunity to share some advice and tips with the Power of Moms community. You’ve been an amazing friend for a few years now, and it was really great to have this candid convo with you on the podcast. Really appreciate you inviting me on, and I hope this episode will be helpful!
LOVED having you on the podcast, Kate! And it’s been wonderful hearing how well your Kickstarter campaign is going. I ordered my Freedom Journal!! xoxo
Great podcast topic! You are right in that parents are the greatest source of inspiration for kids. They need to hear and/or see you demonstrating that entrepreneurship is definitely a possibility. Have them get online and find stories of young entrepreneurs. Maya Penn is a great example. She started a business and a non-profit by the time she turned 15. I write a blog that is all about teen entrepreneurship training. I see stories every day of kids starting a business before they even get to college. It is definitely something do-able especially in this day and technological age!
Thanks so much for sharing about Maya Pen! I’m excited to research her story and share it with my children. And how fun that you write a blog about teen entrepreneurship! I would LOVE to see a post called “10 Ways Your Teen Can Start a Business Before Getting to College.” Do you have one like that? Or do you want to write it? We’d love to share it with our community! 🙂
Thanks so much. Just the inspiration I needed to hear to keep going, inspiring my own kids.
Great show! I’ve been a long time fan of EOFire and actually April, you were the first interview I ever listened to, which is how I found Power of Moms! My husband and I both believe in teaching our son about the option of entrepreneurship for his future. Loved hearing some tips from you and Kate. =)
Bambi, how fun that you found Power of Moms through my EOFire interview! Thanks so much for commenting, and I love that you’re teaching your son about entrepreneurship. I bet he’s already off to a good start! Take care and thanks again for commenting here!
If Parents out there want their kids to be creative innovative thinkers we need to start looking at our school systems and how we as parents can help reform education in our society. Check out the website http://www.mltsfilm.org for a trailer and information about a documentary that debuted at the Sundance Film Institute last year. It talks about how children are not getting the skill sets that they need to progress and succeed in the world. It suggests a better way and gives the audience something to think about. Check to see if there are showings of the film in your area. The producer and director went across the country last year showing the film to tens of thousands. Now it is up to the general public to have showings and get the word out about this film and to generate ideas for education reform.
I love that video trailer, Danielle! I signed up for their maling list. Wonder if they’d like to be on Power of Moms Radio? 🙂 Thanks for your recommendation!
Yes, please tell me more about the Power of Moms Radio – and thank you for the support!

Hi Susan, I’m Andrea, the assistant here at Power of Moms. You can find Power of Moms Radio in iTunes, Stitcher, or wherever you prefer to subscribe to podcasts. It is one of my favorite “tools” at Power of Moms. Many women tune in each week as April and Saren interview a variety of people on many different topics. It’s great to listen to while folding laundry, commuting, doing dishes, etc. We have a wonderful community of 70,000 women here! We are interested in knowing more about the film Danielle mentioned. Are you personally involved with the film? Thanks for your interest in Power of Moms!
Thanks for sharing this! I love that you want to support your son’s ideas. It’s so hard to watch our kids fail, but when we remove the chance of failure, we remove the chance for success as well. But how do we help them help themselves?
One book that really helped me find concrete ideas of how to teach my kids to be independent learners and doers is Project-Based Homschooling by Lori Pickert. It’s not just for homeschoolers. The ideas can be used by anyone. It’s about how to support the authentic interests of our kids and help them take it deeper and stick with it longer.
Danielle has a good point, but reforming the school system is a BIG project that will take some time. This book is full of ideas that any parent can start today to help their kids become entrepreneurs.

Janet, thank you so much for sharing this resource. My children often aren’t challenged enough at school and several teachers have recommended that I incorporate some more project-based learning at home…(but I sure wish they had more time to do it at school). I will look into this book. Thank you for sharing this!
