Editor’s note: The Power of Moms is a website for mothers of all religious preferences. Our Spiritual Sundays section is a place where our authors can write about thoughts that are more spiritual in nature, and our goal is to gather a wide variety of perspectives. If you (or someone you know) has something to add to this section to help us reach a wider audience of mothers, please send the submission to [email protected]. Thank you!
Have you ever heard a child say something that made you stop and think? I’m sure you have, I think we all have. Children just always seem to see things in the simplest ways. Their perspective is so refreshing and so honest. I love it!
However, there are those occasions when their honesty is “not” so refreshing. I’m pretty sure that at this point, you can insert your own examples. Today, though, I wanted to share with you what a sweet little girl named Megan said. Her statement was:
“Moms make families strong through their hope and love.”
It may not seem groundbreaking or something we haven’t heard before; of course love can make a family strong but, hope? Hmm… for some reason the word “hope” just stuck out. I guess it’s because, I never really thought that my “hope”, as a mom, is supposed to help make our family stronger. I mean, we all hope for lots of things. I hope the kids go to bed on time, I hope my kids get good grades, I hope they remember to say their prayers at night. Is this the kind of “hope” she’s talking about?
I guess if I break it down it’d be like this: if they go to bed on time they’ll be better rested and hopefully, getting the right amount of rest will make them healthier. I know if they get good grades in school it’ll build their self-esteem and hopefully, that’ll help them have more confidence in tasks or jobs they are asked to perform. If they say their prayers at night, I know that they’ll learn about faith and hopefully, they’ll learn to have faith in God and others.
I guess if you look at the big picture, all these things I’m hoping for could help the family be stronger. If we’re making good choices, our family will be happier, and a happy family means a strong family unit, right? Is it really that simple?
I guess it seems that this little girl, Megan, was right after all. My “hopes”, as a mom, do help our families grow stronger in one way or another. How funny that this simple little word that I had never really taken notice of before could be so powerful.
QUESTION: What was your “hope” and once you focused on this “hope” did it create new “hopes” for you?
CHALLENGE: Use one of your “hopes” to create a stronger family unit.

Such a great article, Lisa! I have high hopes for my family, as well. It’s that optimism that gives us the power to go on.
