We received a question from a mom who was wondering what healthy eating can and should do for a mom. She’s seen the never-ending diets that are flaunted on magazine covers at all the check-out stands. She’s heard about all the latest “superfoods.” But she was wanted to know if there’s a way to simply eat healthfully all the time rather than dieting – and if so, how that could work. Well, at https://www.thedietdynamo.com/mayo-clinic-diet-plan/ is where you will find the answer.
Since healthy eating for themselves and their families is something April and Saren think about and talk about a lot, they decided to devote this week’s radio show to this important and often tricky topic.
In this 35-minute show from our archives, they share:
- some simple the food “rules” they’ve made for themselves
- tips for eating healthily while on the run as moms
- ideas for helping ourselves and our kids develop a real appetite for healthy foods
- thoughts on how we can develop a more positive and realistic attitude towards food and towards our bodies

I enjoyed listening to your podcast about healthy eating. I do my best to serve healthy foods to my kids but it’s still challenging when they are young. My kids are 3, 5 + 7. They are getting better about trying some things but outside of forcing them, they just aren’t going to eat certain vegetables or foods right now. I have offered a variety of dips and will continue to offer them a variety of foods each day but am curious how you handle this with you families. How did you/do you encourage your kids to eat new foods (especially vegetables). Do you have them eat a certain number of bites? Require they eat them? I am just wondering at what ages they became “excited” about eating vegetables for a snack. I have read a lot about this, just curious to hear about your experience.
Great question!! Amy McCready has some great tips on this. (Positive Parenting Solutions) I like how she emphasizes making healthy foods available (and junk foods not…on a regular basis), and they can choose to eat or not, but they can’t choose junk over healthy foods. Some of my kids LOVE veggies, and others don’t, but we keep working. 🙂 Thank you!!!
A while ago you had an episode about Intuitive Eating (episode 147). I ended up buying that book and it has really helped me. Maybe you could include a link to that episode in the show notes as another resource for people. Thanks for the great podcast!
Thanks for the suggestion, Lisa! We’ve just added the link in the show notes.
I loved listening to this episode. I am on the same page as both of you with my goals for myself and my family.
One thing I have struggled with is when to prep fruits and vegetables. I want to have baggies to grab for a quick snack and I have filled them a few times but then weeks would go by before I made time to re-stock the fridge. Then I had the idea to do it every morning when we are making lunches. If we are already prepping food for lunch, I can easily check the fridge for fruits and veggies to grab and chop them then. Plus, it gives me a regular time to remember to do it.
One other thing that has helped at our house is having a bowl of nuts on the counter. Instead of the candy bowl like my sweet Grandma has, we have a bowl of nuts so we can quickly grab a healthy snack when needed.
Thanks for sharing your ideas!
Such AWESOME ideas!! I love this! It’s totally a work in process. 🙂 Glad to have you with us!!
Great podcast! It is inspiring me to do better with our snacks. Can you post the recipe for the energy balls April mentioned in the podcast? Thanks!!
