I had visions of the kind of mom I wanted to be. A sufficiently organized mom who has a sense of order and control in a home of crazy, chaotic children. It’s only taken me 14 years to get to the point where my day-to-day life finally looks like those “visions.

Discovering the 4 to 1 P.T. Cruiser
I’m always looking for ways to improve, so I took on a challenge. “Make your home life better. Make a special effort to refrain from judging or criticizing, and watch for positive qualities.” This new formula was so powerful- it changed the atmosphere of our home.
Breathe. Be Happy.
Games are so much fun! I enjoy playing them, how about you? Here’s one I’ve been playing; it’s a mind game called “Breathe. Be happy.” Ok, so it’s not like Monopoly but, it’s best played when running late, which is always or when both children are crying.
So How Exactly Do You Feed a Baby Bird?
On the back porch was an empty, hanging flower planter. It wasn’t the most aesthetically pleasing thing but, it suited a family of birds who made it their home. Occasionally, I would hoist kids over my head to look at the small, white speckled eggs nestled there. Then they hatched.
All that Glitters is…PURE EVIL!!!
I have a house full of children who are all apparently in the “creative” phase of life. They love to generate stuff, and lots of it. If it involves markers, crayons, paintbrushes, beads, fabric or wood, my children (minus my way-too-busy-for-crafts three year old) are all over it.
Can Mothers of Infants Make Progress?
We’re going to be talking a lot over the next month about The Power of Progress, but before we get too carried away with lots of pie-in-the-sky plans and goals, I wanted to address a special group of mothers that often have a hard time feeling like they are making any progress: the mothers of infants. Becoming Snow White
Every other week or so, my four-year-old, Luke, latches on to a new movie or show and it becomes his entire world. He always has a favorite character and suddenly I find myself calling him “Chick Hicks”, “Cranky the Crane”, or “Randall” before he will respond to me. As luck would also have it, […]
Spiritual Sundays: Enduring to the End
Editor’s Note: The Power of Moms is a website for mothers of all religious preferences. Our Spiritual Sundays section is a place where our authors can write about thoughts that are more spiritual in nature, and our goal is to gather a wide variety of perspectives. If you (or someone you know) has something to […]
If All Else Fails, Just Give Up
To listen to this post rather than reading it, click here. Did I really just type that title? Aren’t we supposed to keep trying and never give up? The younger, more optimistic version of me would be appalled that I now view giving up as a viable strategy. It’s not that I’m jaded now. It’s […]
Hold What You Have
I was watching old family videos the other day, and found one that made me feel a little guilty. Natalie had just started to giggle and I was doing all sorts of silly things to make her laugh for the camera. Luke was nearby trying to get in on the action. I doubt anyone else […]
How to Keep from “Losing It” – Episode 7
Cookies in the milk jug, tantrums at the grocery store, strong personalities you wish you could control . . . . It feels nearly impossible sometimes to keep your wits about you when everything seems to be going wrong. In this podcast, we’ll discuss questions like the following: “What defines patience?” “Is anger a choice?” […]
A Work in Progress
Firstborn children are special. You know why? Because they are the guinea pigs of all mothers everywhere. Let’s be honest, how many of us knew what the heck we were doing when that ceremonial hospital wheelchair pushed us out into our new world, bundle in arms, like a runner coming out of the starting block? […]
