As a mother, when you hear the word “patience,” what comes to mind? (Besides, “I have none.”) For me, it’s the image of a woman who can “keep calm and carry on” amidst all the daily noise, chaos and demands of her children – whatever the age.
When I was young my Dad would sing this little tune – usually to the background of six kids banging utensils, crashing toys, yelling and chasing each other round the house while one of us wheeled through the kitchen on roller skates: “I talk to the treeeees…. but they don’t listen to me.”

Lecturing and moralizing (i.e. talking a lot) does not help our kids improve their behavior. A short statement of our beliefs and then silence can do all the teaching we need. We can even use just one word to help us get our point across.
I had to tell the boys “WAIT” several times the other morning. “Wait” seemed impossible for them to bear. It was just under ten minutes- nothing too long in MY time frame. But, are we able to “wait” through the Lord’s time frame?
This year has been good, but it has also been challenging. Then a friend of mine recently wrote on Facebook that this has been “the best year of [her] life, hands down.” I thought about her sentiment and wondered if I could echo it. I wasn’t sure that I could.

I didn’t realize how much I would grow as a mother, but as I reflect on my life now, I see that many of the lessons I have needed have been learned from my children.
Regardless of who is having the meltdown, me or one of my children, the fact is, life is full of them. So let’s prepare for the inevitable and devise a plan to deal with the many meltdowns that come with motherhood.
I am slowly and over time changing my expectations of myself as a mom. I’m realizing that I will not always be nice. I do not have to do everything right. I can’t say that I will never make mistakes.
