Author: Beth Aldrich with Eve Adamson
Basic Overview: The title says it all: You can have your cake and eat it too (along with lots of healthy food and plenty of water)! The premise of this book is that depriving our bodies of food, especially good food, is not the way to lose weight. The author presents a ten-week program to implement baby steps towards eating better and feeling great. The last part of the book also includes 21 days’ worth of recipes for a healthy and satisfying breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and even dessert.
Parts I Liked Best:
Some diet and nutrition books can either be highly scientific (and a bit dry) or overly-simplistic. I thought this book did a good job of falling somewhere in the middle. The author explains health and nutrition in a thorough, yet friendly way. I appreciated the baby steps approach.
For example, instead of trying to immediately start drinking eight glasses of water a day, in week one, you try for four glasses, in week two, five and so on. Healthy foods are added in the same manner while still allowing room for foods that you enjoy. I like that the author has you think through what foods you love and why and offers ways to make them healthier. I think our thoughts and attitudes can be very powerful in the quest to be healthy and lose weight.
How This Book Made an Impact in My Life, Especially as a Mother (or why I just really liked it):
For someone who typically drank 2-3 glasses a water a day, I’m now up to five and determined to make it to eight! This book helped me become more aware of what’s in my food (wow-sugar really is in everything!) and motivated me to make some healthy changes. Corn on the cob for a mid-afternoon snack? I would never have thought of that, but it actually does sound good! While some of the changes the author urges for are a bit costly and may not be for everyone (go organic, no white sugar, glass instead of plastic storage containers, etc…), there are plenty of easy and helpful tips for a well-fed, slimmer, and happier you.
