Title: Ironmom
Author: Mette Harrison
Basic Overview:
The author, Mette Harrison, becomes a dedicated triathlete after she participates in an Ironman race soon after a personal tragedy. As she completes her first race, she realizes that it will not be her last. As she trains and progresses, she coaches her husband and five children as they also learn to overcome the mental blocks that often come with pushing our bodies beyond the norm.
A large portion of Ironmom contains tips and hints for others wanting to start or improve their race training. Harrison details running tips, equipment, healthy eating ideas, training plans, and “finding your own super powers.”
Parts I Liked Best:
Harrison’s honesty about how she has made time for exercise as a busy mother is refreshing. She has made training for races a priority and consequently, has simplified or eliminated some typical mom routines. While her top picks may not work for other mothers, the same strategy will. If our schedule is full and we want to exercise, then we will likely need to adjust our list of “necessary” to-do’s.
How This Book Made an Impact in My Life, Especially as a Mother:
Ironmom reminded me that most mothers have to dig themselves out of a hard spot at some point. Most of us have emotional trenches that seem to be too hard to get out of alone. Harrison reminds us that there are others nearby to help, just like the volunteers at the aid stations during a race, who help us to keep going. We should also search within ourselves to find a “tool” to thrive. For Harrison, this tool was training for, and participating in, Ironman races. It gave her a positive way to move forward.
What I appreciated most in Ironmom is how Harrison seemed to keep her family in focus. While she cut some things out of her life in order to train for races, it wasn’t her family. As mothers we strive to nourish the person within, but our reason for doing so should come back to those faces looking back at us—faces hoping to see a mother that is confident and happy in who she is and who she continues to become.
