Here’s a great story sent in by Mary Jenkins to help you see the worth of what you’ll learn in the webinars:
I attended the webinar last night on “How to help your kids WANT to behave.” It was fabulous! I came away with such a renewed sense of strength and hope. Almost immediately, by implementing a few of these tips and steps, I have noticed little changes in my children’s behavior. Things that normally would have been a big deal were handled calmly and effectively. The tips about eye contact, having clear rules and consequences, letting the children be involved in coming up with those, and being calm and well rested were all things I incorporated today, and they worked wonderfully.
I especially loved the idea to ask them “How do you think that makes mom feel?” I used that today, and instead of continuing with his tantrum, my three-year-old was able to stop and really have a discussion with me and see that I was sad because he had told me no and had not listened, and we discussed what we could do to change that next time.
For example, today at the mall, my three-year-old was playing in the play area. He was was climbing up the slide, making it hard for other children to slide down. I said “Nathaniel, those other children want to go down the slide. What do you think we should do so they can enjoy the slide?” We talked about it for a minute, and he said he could not climb up the slide.
Well, I was feeling pretty darn good about myself and how this had all worked, so when he didn’t move right away I said, “All right then, let’s move to the side so they can go down” to which he responded “no.” I kindly reminded him that the consequence in our family for saying no to mom was that we would be all done with the playing area, even though we had only been there a short time. I gently asked him to move again, and he again responded with an emphatic NO. I calmly collected my things, took his hand, and starting to go towards the stroller. This is where the tantrum usually happens, and it did.
He was so mad and crying and screaming, but I managed to put him firmly but gently in the stroller. Then I knelt down next to the stroller, making eye contact with him on his level, and was able to have a great discussion with him about why he felt sad, how mom felt sad because he said no, and what we could do next time to change that behavior.
This really works! I’m excited to review my notes and the webinar again and again and most importantly be able to feel like my children WANT to help and behave!
We so appreciate Mary sending in that story, and we are excited to help you create incredible experiences within your own families. We look forward to meeting with you at our next webinar!
