Purpose of our Abstracts
Books have the power to shape our minds, characters, and perspectives.
We have limited time to sit quietly and read, but during the time it would take to peruse the back of a cereal box or read the latest issue of “People,” we could be enhancing our minds with ideas from the best books.
Books help us to see that there is a world outside of ourselves and our carpool route. They can broaden our knowledge of the world and help us feel less alone, less constrained, and more excited about the possibilities available to us.
Emerson said, "There are 850,000 volumes in the Imperial Library in Paris. If a man were to read industriously from dawn to dark for sixty years, he would die in the first alcove. Would that some charitable soul, after losing a great deal of time among the false books and alighting upon a few true ones, which made him happy and wise, would name those which have been bridges or ships to carry him safely over dark morasses and barren oceans, into the heart of sacred cities, into palaces and temples" (Harvard Classics Reading Guide, p.11).
Let’s teach each other which books are the best, which ones are worth our time and which ones will help us see that our work is worth doing and worth doing well.
What books lift and inspire you? We are happy to accept a variety of book abstracts, but each book needs to meet a few basic qualifications:
(1) You really like it and recommend it.
(2) After reading it, you want to be a better mother
(3) The content is appropriate for a general audience.
