- The Power of Sharing Ideas: What Works
A1. Just repeat to myself, "This too shall pass."
A2. If I start feeling down about my life, or if I can't seem to make my children happy, then I try to "take a break" with the kids in tow. I pack everyone in the car then go do something that I know we will all enjoy. I'll go to a new park or a museum or explore a new part of town. I'll call a friend to hang out-- even if she doesn't have kids, my kids enjoy going to other grown-ups' houses just to get out! Sometimes I just stay home and let my son help me make a batch of cookies. (Cookies always cheer me up!) I can almost always think of something that will make me happy, if I'm not happy at the moment. I should note that there are certain things I never do when I want to take a break with the kids. I never go shopping with the kids--that counts as work and is definitely more stressful than relaxing!
