Sleep is important!  As a new mother, this book helped to give me a better perspective on sleep habits for whole family.

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child
A step-by-step program for a good night's sleep
Author:
Dr. Marc Weissbluth, M.D.

A few weeks after the birth of my first baby, the effects of sleep deprivation set in.  I was a new mother, saddled with lots of emotion, and I had a baby that did not sleep very well.  I lived in a fog, bouncing the crying baby, singing, pacing, vacuuming-  I was desperate.  A friend saw the bags under my eyes and recommended this book, and it truly changed my perspective on the importance of sleep.  I struggled with feeling bad for letting the baby "cry it out", or guilt for "giving in".  After reading this I realized that quality sleep is essential for baby's growth and development and that I needed to help my baby sleep.

Author Marc Weissbluth, M.D. teaches parents how they can help their children to establish healthy sleep habits.  He explains that babies need sleep and it is the parents busy schedules, guilt at hearing them cry, or just good intentions gone wrong that interfere with baby getting quality rest.  He states that parents need to do what is healthy for their baby and what they as parents can live with long-term.

The book is a valuable reference- it also address sleep issues in children and teens.  We have referred back to this book when struggling to keep a two year old in his "big boy bed".  Again with "night terrors".  And again with children who "need one more kiss", a drink, potty, etc.  We have used it to establish healthy bedtimes that correspond with needed sleep.  I appreciate the practical counsel and clear instruction throughout the book.  Dr. Weissbluth's advice continues to help my family get the healthy sleep we all need.
