Title: Mom Rules
Authors: Soni and Treion Muller
Basic Overview:
Author of Dad Rules, Treion Muller, has paired up with his wife Soni for his latest book. Mom Rules is a fun and inspiring read to help new and veteran mothers alike because as the cover says, “even superheroes need help sometimes”.
Similar to his previous book, Treion and Soni have gleaned advice from their own lives and the lives of mothers they admire to write a manual with 85 rules. The book is comprised of three sections: What Moms Should Know, What Moms Should Say and What Moms Should Do. Far from being judgmental or condescending, these rules offer practical advice with a dose of humor.
Parts I Liked Best:
Here were ten of my favorite rules from the book:
- Rule 1: Show up for the job every day. Of all the rules, I think this one has stuck with me the most. It’s easy to follow, we usually don’t have a choice! But it’s reminded me to really be present in motherhood and treat it more like the important job it is.
- Rule 11: If you want something for yourself, hide it. I can’t even tell you how validated I felt upon learning that the author’s mom would lock herself in a bathroom to eat a candy bar….so she wouldn’t have to share.
- Rule 24: No matter how bad it looks, hair will grow back. This just made me laugh.
- Rule 37: Don’t talk negatively about your body. It was very interesting to hear how this affects sons as well as daughters.
- Rule 40: Try to say “yes” as much as possible.
- Rule 46: Get used to saying “Go look again.” I love their idea of charging a quarter if you have to find it yourself!
- Rule 50: If what you are saying isn’t getting across, try saying it differently. You mean just repeating yourself at an escalating volume isn’t effective? Whoops.
- Rule 53: If the technology doesn’t involve the kids, put it away. I’m really trying to be better at this.
- Rule 55: Raise children, not clones of you. It’s important to encourage each child to develop their individual talents, even if it’s not necessarily your passion.
- Rule 68: Remember that your relationship with your child is more important than punctuality, possessions or other people.
How This Book Made an Impact In My Life, Especially as a Mother (or why I just really liked it):
I have found myself thinking a lot about these rules since I first read the book. It did a great job at motivating me to be a better mother while also making me feel good about what I’m already doing. With its advice for the day-to-day of motherhood and inspiring ideologies, there’s sure to be something for every mother in this book.
The authors of Mom Rules are donating 40% of all proceeds from the book to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
