Title: Advent with the Word
Author: Kirsten Holmberg
Basic Overview:
Advent with the Word is perfect for your December morning devotionals or for starting a new family tradition. In a busy, consumer-driven season, it’s nice to have little reminders about the true meaning of Christmas. Author Kirsten Holmberg expounds on one word from scriptural text for each day in December. She then issues a daily “in the flesh” challenge to apply what you have learned and bring the spirit of the season into your home.
Parts I Liked Best:
Throughout the book, Holmberg goes back to the Greek or Hebrew translation of words to glean further insight from their meaning. Two that struck me in particular were “believe” and “so”. One definition of belief is “to place confidence in, to trust…” hence “One must be so persuaded of the truth of who Jesus is that all confidence is placed in Him” (page 32).
In the John 3:16 it says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son…” In the original language, “so” means “in this manner.” As the author explains, “It speaks to the quality, the nature, of God’s love, not just the degree.”
I especially enjoyed the creative ways the author challenges the reader to apply the word into their daily life. From introspection to acts of service, there are countless suggestions on how to turn your mind and heart to God. Many are simple things that we can involve our children with such as looking for a lonely person to befriend, discussing the symbolic nature of Christmas decorations and making a “hallelujah chain” to remember all the ways God has blessed and helped you.
How This Book Made an Impact In My Life, Especially as a Mother (or why I just really liked it):
Amidst all the hustle and bustle of presents and fun traditions, I want my children to feel gratitude for their Savior and a spirit of service towards others. This book is a wonderful way to spiritually prepare ourselves for the holidays.
