Author: Cena Block from Sane Spaces
This free e-book packs dozens of helpful tips in bite-sized pieces. It is divided into four topics: Managing Your Space, Choosing the Right Systems, Taking Care of Self and Setting Up Support. The author explains that whenever we experience chaos or disorder in our lives, the root cause is generally due to a dysfunction within one of these four dimensions.
I thought it was very interesting that before delving into the how-to’s of organizing, this book suggests doing two things. First, determine your goals and priorities. What is important to your family? What does success look like in your home? Having a clear vision of this can help you create the life you want.
Second, set a budget and stick to it. Isn’t it true that too often, when our lives are crazy, our spending goes crazy too? This suggestion also made me think about how often I think, “Okay, I’m going to organize this room,” and so I think I need to go and buy a bunch of containers and organizing gadgets. Having a set budget can also help you spend your money wisely when it comes to organizing.
Parts I Liked Best:
I really liked two suggestions from the “Managing Your Space” section and was able to implement them with great success.
The first suggestion was to create a launch/landing pad for all your comings and goings. I wish I have a mud room, but I don’t. However, I realized that I could have two “pads”, one by my back door for shoes and one by the hall closet for bags and coats.
The second suggestion was create zones everywhere. Just like a kindergarten classroom, your home can have zones where things that belong together reside together where you use them. I realized that all of our arts and crafts supplies were scattered around, mostly downstairs. But we tend to do most of our projects at the kitchen table. So, I took a kitchen cupboard and corralled all of our supplies there. It’s been great! No more hunting for crayons, tape or Play-Doh.
Other topics included how to manage papers, handle the transition with a new baby, use a calendar and plan meals. At the end of the book is a checklist to help you get started on each of the four dimensions and lists of helpful resources.
How This Book Made an Impact In My Life, Especially as a Mother (or why I just really liked it):
I really liked the short length of this book and its quick tips. When you’re feeling frazzled and disorganized, it can be overwhelming to sit down and read a huge book on organizing. These simple suggestions can get you on the road to sanity quickly!
