I ENVY that laundry room! Our washer and dryer are in the kitchen and laundry always spills into the living room for folding.

I really like your system. What works for us lately is that I do each kid’s load on a different day. So one hamper becomes 1 load, folded and goes back to the room it came from. I saw that tip somewhere and it really works so far. I don’t sort my kids’ clothes, but I do sort my DH and mine (we have a double-sided hamper in our room so the clothes get pre-sorted in there). Towels from the bathrooms and sheets go right back onto hooks and beds, no folding required.

How do you do it if a lot of their clothes always need stain treatment? Do they look first and treat it? Or is there a way to do it without treating?

We don’t have a lot of stains to deal with, these days. When they were babies, there were more but now that they know how to lean over their plate to eat and we keep outside play clothes (clothes that can be stained and that’s just fine) and school clothes separate, we don’t do much stain treatment. If I see a stain on a child’s clothes, I instruct him or her to put that item of clothing on the folding table in the laundry room rather than the hamper and then I treat whatever’s on that table that evening before I go to bed so it’ll be ready to go into the washer when we do the next load.

In my house we have 5 minute laundry races. When the five minutes are up we count how many pieces each person was able to fold and the person with the most gets bragging rights til the next race.
